Who would benefit from this programme?
Sensory school leavers (19+) this includes those with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Significant developmental delay, Significant intellectual or cognitive impairment, complex needs (Health Medical), sensory impairment who wish to continue their learning in a college environment. The curriculum is personalised so that you can participate in a range of activities which stimulate and encourage your development. Our core themes for learning are communication and interaction, cognition and learning, social, emotional and mental health, and independence.

This course is the perfect follow on from those wanting to continue to learn after leaving full-time education. This course will provide you with many opportunities to expand your skills and give you a helping hand in progressing forward. We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment and aim to help you make the most of your learning opportunities. We want to ensure that students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, feel welcome and supported throughout their time at college.

Year 1

During you first half of the college term, you will take part in an assessment during which you will have the opportunity to sample different teaching sessions to find which sessions challenge and develop your individual strengths and personal development goals.

You will take part in our engaging programme of practical and vocational sessions based around the outcomes identified within your EHCP, these sessions take place within the colleges purpose built provision and includes art, discovery, sensory cooking, relaxation, yoga, music, life skills, performing arts, sensory workshop, switch/screen workshop, fun with food and Tac-Pac. You will participate in all of this as well as use the library, interaction studio and sensory screen studio.

My Community gives you the opportunity to get out and about within the local areas to experience new places, sensory stimulation and interaction chances. Initially this would be based within our campus and then extends into the local area and beyond as you develop and gain confidence.

There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to complete an application form, submit satisfactory references and come for an interview. During your interview, you will meet a member of our team who will give you the opportunity to talk about your future aspirations and discuss any support needs you require.

Many learners have already experienced our Sensory provision through the schools link programme which allows both the learners an in-depth taster of these sessions and the college the opportunity to observe the learner within our provision.

We will need to see your learning disability assessment or your Education Health and Care plan (EHCP).

There are no formal assessment criteria, however regular attendance on all your college days is a necessity, subject to medical appointments.

At the end of the course, you will be invited to a review where your progress and aspirations are discussed. Subject to satisfactory attendance and progress you will have the opportunity to apply to the Future Pathways Sensory year 2 course within supported learning that will help you to further develop your independent living and vocational skills.

You will also have the opportunity to apply to further courses within the College that match your future aspirations or work-based experience within supported learning. Throughout your time on the course, you will have regular opportunities to meet with your tutor to celebrate progress and review your additional support and development needs.

Once you have applied, you will be contacted to attend an interview, then you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol upon your chosen course of study. You will also be able to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
