Course Overview

This seven-week course aims to introduce and advance your skills using traditional and contemporary hand embroidery.
Using selected images and colour themes you will be encouraged and guided to explore and create a variety of backgrounds. The backgrounds created will be achieved by using a range a fabrics and techniques.
Samples produced will be embellished with experimental and traditional hand stitchwork.
The techniques and processes learned will be employed in the production of a final decorative panel.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will experiment with arrange of backgrounds; these will include use of dyed calico, hessian and silk.
You will learn how to use transfer paints and crayons.
You will employ dyed water colour paper in your designs.
Stitches learned will include running stitch, bullion and French knots, couching, seeding and cross stitch along with raised and more experimental stitching.
You will learn how to design and develop ideas before producing a final piece.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.

How you will be assessed

There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one to one feedback.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress onto other areas of practical crafts. You will have opportunities to progress onto further courses, or you may wish to take your experience forward into designing and producing your own work at home, utilising the skills you have developed.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.

Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
