T Level Media, Broadcast and Production – Events and Venues Technician – C7849

Are you interested in the technical side of events such as theatre productions, concerts, and music gigs? Interested in sound, lighting, props, production and stage management? The Events and Venues Technician T level prepares you for an exciting future working in the events and productions industry. The strong transferrable skills you will develop will equip you for working in the industry in a range of different venues and locations and on a variety of productions and events.

For 80% of the course, you will be college based, which includes training at the college’s city centre venue, the Sue Townsend Theatre, using up to date industry equipment and facilities. For the remainder of your time, you will complete an industry placement to undertake an employer-set project and get more hands-on experience in a real-life setting. At the end of this course, you should be well and truly ready for work.

Year 1

Over the two years, you will cover aspects of stage management, lighting, sound, props and set making and you will learn the importance of how these areas work together. You will also look at production arts planning; the context of performance; health and safety; and working for yourself in the industry.

The structure of the course means the first year is when more of the operator and technician roles are learnt and completed, before progressing onto more senior production roles in year two.

Year 2

Year two is more in-depth, and it introduces you to the more senior roles in stage production. You learn and develop the roles of lighting designer, sound designer, deputy stage manager and stage manager, again working on college and external productions to demonstrate learning.

T levels are only for students who will be 16 – 18 on 31st August of the year they start the course.
You need the following to be accepted on the T level;
GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 or higher.
At least 3 other GCSE’s at grade 4 or above.
One reference (this is usually from you school).
90% attendance at school (or your last place of work/study) – this is desirable.

There are several formal assessments during the two years: external exams, controlled assessments, practical summary assignments and an employer-led set project.

Together, the assessments generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction*.

At the end of your T level, you receive a nationally recognized certificate with a clear breakdown of your achievements. The T level can be be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

On completion of the two year course, you may decide to study for an undergraduate degree in a related area. You may also go into work in sound and lighting design and operation, stage management, and set design in theatre or concert venues. The course will have helped you develop a broad range of technical skills, the experience of working with clients and external organizations, working as a member of a production team, a good understanding of health and safety legislation and how to maintain equipment and technology.

You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the college for a tour and suitability audition. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
