T Level Health – Supporting the Care of Children Young People – P00561

For 80% of the T level, you’re in the classroom, learning core scientific concepts and key regulations that apply across the health and science sector. Armed with this knowledge, you step into a 45-day placement with your chosen pathway you will work on an employer-set project, so you can really dive into your career and get the feel for life as an adult healthcare assistant.

You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

Year 1

You learn how the industry works, explore healthcare roles and pathways and the exciting diversity of employers and organisations you could work for. And your friendly tutors introduce you to all the contexts, theories and principles vital to the health and science industry.

By the end of year one, you have a solid understanding of core scientific concepts and key regulations: managing information, health and safety and good scientific/clinical practice

Year 2

When year two arrives, you get into the heart of supporting children and young people – With your classmates, you go deep into what supporting children and young people means, how you can support the team and really see how carers meet the needs of children and young people.

You learn to assist with clinical tasks – think moving or handling children and young people, taking physiological measurements, collecting specimens, applying simple wound dressings and supporting skin integrity assessments to care and treat skin conditions.

Supporting children and young people, day to day, also comes into the course. You build a toolkit of ways to help individuals help themselves with their own nutrition, hygiene, health and wellbeing.

It’s in the second year, you take your industry placement and work on an employer-set project. This is your chance to put your knowledge into practice in a real-life setting and experience first-hand what it’s like to work in health and be part of the a children and young peoples team.

To bring you up to speed in English, maths and digital skills relevant to the health and science route, you work with tutors to get that all-important level 2 in English and maths you need to complete the course.

T levels are for people who are 16-18 on 31 August on the date that they start the course.

You need the following to be accepted on the Health and Science T level:

5 GCSEs including maths and English and double science at grade 4 or higher
one reference (this is usually from your school).
90% attendance at school (or your last place or work/ study) – this is desirable.

There are several formal assessments during the two years: external exams, controlled assessments, practical summary assignments and an employer-led set project. 

Together, the assessments generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction*.

At the end of your T level, you receive a nationally recognised certificate with a clear breakdown of your achievements. The T level can be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

Additional Costs

There are no tuition fees to study a T Level if you start before you are 19 years old but there will be material costs that will need to be paid at the start of the course.

You will need to have an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to work with children and vulnerable adults, which is an additional cost of £44.

This is a professional programme and all settings expect staff to wear a uniform. All T level health and science students will wear a uniform in both college and placement. This consists of the pathways medical tunic (available from the college at a cost of £17.99* each) black trousers (not leggings), and black shoes.

With your T level in healthcare and science under your belt, you are ready to start your career in health care or take a higher level apprenticeship or a degree.

We have independent careers advisors to walk you through your next steps, sharing information, advice and guidance to give you the confidence to kickstart your career.

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to an interview at the College to meet key staff, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
