T Level Health and Science – Support of Midwifery Team Specialism – C7269

Midwives stand the test of time. They are by a Mum’s side from the earliest days, through birth and as they find their feet in their new world. Midwives have quietly, reassuringly supported women in their most exciting, most terrifying time, year after year, decade after decade, century after century.

By taking the health and science T level, midwifery specialism, you join this community of carers, who have a profound effect on the people they work with. Created by experienced, practising midwives, the two-year supporting the midwifery team course prepares you for a hands-on role in the health and science workplace.

Alongside your classmates, you learn the core science and key regulations you need to be effective in any healthcare role. Then, the bit everyone looks forward to, you join a real-life midwifery team for 45 days, so you can get to grips with your employer-set project.

By the end of your journey, you have the skills and knowledge to step confidently into any birthing room, any antenatal class, any home birth and support mum, baby and midwife with grace.

Your T level also prepares you to progress to a higher level apprenticeship or a degree, giving you a choice of progressions.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

Year 1

To the patter of tiny feet, you step into your first year to master crucial health and science concepts, theories and principles and the key regulations you need in any healthcare role. All that lovely managing information, health and safety guidelines and good scientific/clinical practice

With the basics in place, the rest of the first year takes you on a healthcare journey, exploring and understanding:
1. real-world infection prevention and control
2. person-centred care, health and wellbeing
3. human anatomy and physiology
4. diseases and disorders

Before the year is out, you have an in-depth look at roles and progression across the healthcare sector and consider the diversity of employers and organisations you could work for.

Year 2

In year two, the fun begins You build a strong understanding of all stages of pregnancy and the relevant clinical tasks and interventions, so Mum feels safe and supported.

You look at the roles and responsibilities in a midwife team and learn exactly how everyone cares for babies, mothers and supporting parents at all stages of pregnancy – antenatal, perinatal and postnatal.

And, of course, part of your new world is the birthing environment, where you work with those glorious newborn treasures, observing and taking measurements,
working towards the following outcomes:

1. Assisting the midwifery team with clinical tasks and learning about the stages of pregnancy, looking at the various different roles and responsibilities within the team, the range of clinical interventions used to provide maternity support, and the birthing environment.
2. Assisting the midwife to provide care for mothers and supporting parents at all stages, from antenatal to postnatal.
3. Assisting with the care of newborn babies by undertaking observations and measurements.

As your confidence in supporting the midwifery team flourishes during your 45-day placement, you dive into your employer-set project. This is your time to shine, drawing on all your classroom knowledge and applying it to the real midwifery world.

If you need an extra hand with English, maths and digital skills on the health and science route, we have tutors to support you to get that all-important level 2 in English and maths you need to complete the course.

T levels are for people who are 16-18 on 31 August on the date that they start the course.

You need the following to be accepted on the Health and Science T level:

5 GCSEs including maths and English and double science at grade 4 or higher
one reference (this is usually from your school).
90% attendance at school (or your last place or work/ study) – this is desirable.

There are several formal assessments during the two years: external exams, controlled assessments, practical summary assignments and an employer-led set project. 

Together, the assessments generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction*.

At the end of your T level, you receive a nationally recognised certificate with a clear breakdown of your achievements. The T level can be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

Additional Costs

There are no tuition fees to study a T Level if you start before you are 19 years old but there will be material costs that will need to be paid at the start of the course.

You will need to have an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to work with children and vulnerable adults, which is an additional cost of £44.

This is a professional programme and all settings expect staff to wear a uniform. All T level health and science students will wear a uniform in both college and placement. This consists of the pathways medical tunic (available from the college at a cost of £17.99* each) black trousers (not leggings), and black shoes.

Your T level in healthcare and science is the start of an exciting, rewarding vocation. From here, you can step into a midwife team in a supporting role or move into a higher level apprenticeship or a degree. More than a career, midwifery is a beautiful way of life.

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to an interview at the College to meet key staff, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
