Course Overview

Our level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour, communication and professional relationships.
This course is aimed at learners looking to work in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.
The minimum age for a learner taking this qualification is 16 years old.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning course covers all aspects of support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher. You will be required to complete 11 mandatory units ranging from learning about schools and colleges as organisations; health and safety; safeguarding; professional relationships; children and young people’s development and behaviour management.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work. You must have an acceptable level in English to start the course (or Functional Skills level 1). Maths at GCSE grade is also preferable, however, it is acceptable for this to be studied in the year alongside the level 2 teaching assistant programme.

How you will be assessed

Assessments are undertaken using a variety of productive methods, which may include observations, written evidence, oral questions, and witness testimonies. For these assessments, you will be allocated an assessor who will examine your practical work.
Learners will need to find a placement in a school/college before coming on to the course. At Leicester College, if you struggle to find a placement we have a dedicated team who will help you find one.

All learners must pay a £30.00 materials fee which is payable upon enrolment onto the course.

Course and Career progression

Following the completion of the level 2 certificate course, you can progress on to the Support in Teaching and Learning Diploma level 3.
Alternatively, progression can also lead you onto a job as a learning support assistant in a school or college or an apprenticeship.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers
advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your
application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your
tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
