Course Overview

If you want to work in the leisure industry or as a sports coach this course will put you on the path to your chosen career. You’ll learn about and develop skills that are needed to continue your education or take the first step in employment or an apprenticeship.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

Throughout the programme you will be challenged and learn about lots of aspects of sports and leisure. You’ll learn about: taking part in sport; planning own fitness programme; sport project and physical activities for children. You will also be required to study Functional Skills in English and maths to continue to develop these skills.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required, or ESOL entry 3.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

All units on this course are assessed solely through ongoing coursework. This could involve written essays, presentations, verbal interview or practical assessment.

Course and Career progression

This course is excellent preparation for learners who wish to progress on to a level 2 diploma in health, fitness and exercise instruction or the level 2 BTEC diploma in sport. Which allows learners to choose a fitness instructing or sport pathway. Previous learners have gained employment in the leisure industry, usually as a consequence of a successful work placement experience.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
