You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified toolkit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16 to 19, you will be enrolled in a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career. If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
This is a one-year course. You will learn about health, safety and environmental issues faced on construction sites, and how to communicate with others on the job. You will also learn practical skills specific to site carpentry, including how to carry out first fix flooring and roofing, how to carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs, how to carry out second fixing operations, how to carry out carpentry maintenance, and how to set up and operate a circular saw.
Entry to this course requires GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which must include a design or technical-based subject. You will also need to provide one reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 95% attendance in your last place of study or work. If you are aged 16-19, you will be enrolled in a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. All students will undertake a monitoring period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment, and application toward study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your first six weeks.
You will be assessed via on-line examinations, multiple choice question papers and practical assignments, covering performance outcomes. All final assessments are set by City Guilds, internal assessments are marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.
