Course Overview

This exciting 20-week course aims to introduce and advance you in the many skills required in the study of the ‘gentle art’ of shoe making.
During this practical course you will be introduced to various shoe styles and methods of construction, taking you through all the relevant aspects of patterns, cutting, sewing, and making up of a shoe.
Alongside this, you will be instructed in the use and understanding of the relevant hand tools, techniques, and components. As you progress, these skills will enable you to produce more advanced work within the subject which has major historical ties to the Leicestershire.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

Throughout the 20-week programme, you will be instructed in various aspects of  shoemaking to produce various prototypes styles.

This will include:
– Types of leather and materials.
– Tools.
– Patterns.
– Clicking.
– Closing.
– Lasting.
– Sole production.
– Health and Safety in  shoe making.
– Health and Safety in the workshop.

All these topics and skills will be covered in our substantial and well equipment specialist footwear workshop

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.

How you will be assessed

There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one-to-one feedback.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress onto other areas of practical crafts. You will have opportunities to progress onto more advanced courses, or you may wish to take your experience forward into designing and producing your own work at home, utilising the skills you have developed.

What Happens Next

You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
