As with the BTEC level 3 Diploma in public services, this course is for anyone who wishes to enter into one of the public services such as the fire, police, royal air force and the army and/or HE. Leicester College is also offering an HNC/D in Public Services (Subject to Validation).
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
What You'll Learn
This course is the second year of the BTEC level 3 Diploma in Public Services and contributes the additional units so that the qualification is equivalent to three A levels. Upon successful completion of this qualification, you can progress to Higher Education or relevant industry employment. The BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services is a one year programme intended to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required in the public service industries. You will study up to nine units which cover a diverse range including Major incidents, Responding to emergencies and Command and control in the uniformed public services.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required, plus another 2 GCSE subjects at Grade 4 (C) or above. Applicants must have also completed the BTEC level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Public Services.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
How you will be assessed
Currently, all units are assessed through ongoing coursework. However, it is likely that in the future BTEC will introduce exams to two units.

If you are aged 19 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However you may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for the course fee.
Course and Career progression
This qualification enables you to gain UCAS points that should enhance their access to Higher Education. Progression into many public service industries including the fire service, police and armed services. In addition, Leicester College has a very good record at progressing students on to related University Courses and now offer our own HND in Public Services. Our links with local Services aid with helping our students move onto employment within the field.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
