Do you want to work as a public service agent? Either the fire service, police, royal air force or the army, this is the course for you. An excellent step into industry-related employment or progression into higher education. Whilst studying at Leicester College you have the opportunity to join the police or army cadets, broadening their experience.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
What You'll Learn
Upon successful completion of this qualification, you can progress on to the extended diploma in public services course. This is a one year programme intended to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required in the public service sector. You will study up to 12 units which cover a diverse range of material including leadership and teamwork, outdoor and adventurous activities, expedition skills, physical preparation for entry into the public services and citizenship and diversity. The units have been developed to assess personal learning and thinking skills across the qualification. This programme comprises 90 credits.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required, as well as another 2 GCSE subjects at Grade 4 (C) or above.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
How you will be assessed
Currently, this course is being assessed through ongoing coursework, such as written essays, presentations, verbal interviews and practical assessment. Please note that the awarding body is looking to introduce two exam based units.

If you are aged 19 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However you may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for the course fee.
Course and Career progression
Upon successful completion, learners can progress on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in public services. Learners may choose to progress into Higher Education or employment within the public service sector, for example, police, fire service, probation service, prison service or the military services, such as the British army, royal navy and royal air force.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
