Course Overview

This accredited qualification is suitable for you if you are 19+ and interested in improving your knowledge and understanding of working in the Public Service Sector including Emergency Services and Government departments.

Over the two days, you will have the opportunity to investigate and understand the ways in which the public services assist members of the public and gain an understanding the everyday needs of members of the public and will also be able to understand the range of career opportunities that the Public Service sector can offer.

Successful individuals will gain a nationally recognised Level 1 Award which is valuable evidence to show employers that you understand how to work in the challenging and rewarding public sector. Particularly suitable for individuals who are returning to work after a period of unemployment who are looking at joining a public service organisation.

You will need to be committed to complete two days of full day of learning (9am – 4pm). This is a classroom-based, two day course which is offered on a regular basis year round (50 weeks of the year including non-term times).

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this two day course, you will take part in a variety of different learning activities, discussion, research and watching short videos where you will be able to:
Day one:
1) Understand the importance of building good relationships with the public and how public services are funded
2) Identify the skills and qualities that are required when assisting members of the public in emergency and everyday non-emergency situations.
3) Understand how public services deal with complaints, different to profit-making organisations
4) Demonstrate the skills needed to effectively communicate with members of the public in a positive way
Day two:
1) Know about different public services within the UK and understand the types of service they offer to the public
2) Research a specific sector and know the types of employment opportunities available within that chosen public service sector
3) Understand the entry requirements expected by employers for new employees
4) Understand where support can be found to improve your chances of gaining employment in that sector and create a basic career plan.

Entry Requirements

This is a level 1 course and although there are no formal entry requirements, a reasonable level of literacy is expected i.e. you can write and speak to make yourself understood.

How you will be assessed

You will complete a variety of short practical and written tasks that will be formally assessed by your tutor to create a portfolio of written evidence.

You will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
Universal Credit
JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)

Evidence of benefits will be required on the application.

On completion of this award, your tutor will be able to provide advice and guidance on other online or distance learning courses, or classroom-based programmes. What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements of the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course.
