This is a classroom-based, one day course which is offered year-round (50 weeks of the year including non-term times). This accredited qualification is suitable for students wishing to improve their knowledge and understanding of working in Public Services. Successful individuals will gain a nationally recognised Level 1 Award. For anyone who is looking for a career in the public service sector, this is a good introduction to what is available and the different pathways available.
There are an additional two other units that you may wish to consider, Assisting the Public and Introduction to Security Work that combines will gain you a Level 1 Award in Public Services. Particularly suitable for individuals who are returning to work after a period of unemployment who wish to work in the security or customer service sector.
You will need to be committed to complete a full day of learning (9 am – 4 pm).
What You'll Learn
During this one day course, you will take part in a variety of different learning activities, discussion, research and watching short videos where you will be able to:
1) Know about different public services within the UK and understand the types of service they offer to the public
2) Research a specific sector and know the types of employment opportunities available within that chosen public service sector
3) Understand the entry requirements expected by employers for new employees
4) Understand where support can be found to improve your chances of gaining employment in that sector and create a basic career plan.
This is a level 1 course and although there are no formal entry requirements, a reasonable level of literacy is expected i.e. you can write and speak to make yourself understood. If you have any concerns regarding your literacy level, please contact us.
How you will be assessed
You will complete a variety of short practical and written tasks that will be formally assessed by your tutor to create a portfolio of written evidence.

You will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in the following categories:
In receipt of one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work-Related Action Group) or low waged.
Evidence of benefits will be required on the application.

Course and Career progression
On completion of this award, your tutor will be able to provide advice and guidance on other programmes. These might include additional qualifications related to working in the Public Service sector e.g. Assisting the Public or alternative employability skills CV writing, interview skills, Customer Service Level 1 or 2 and other short vocational programmes.
This qualification will support anyone to gain employment by improving their confidence by gaining new skills and qualifications.

What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements of the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course.
