Course Overview

You will lean and develop practical skills and knowledge to work in the plumbing industry. There are plumbing subjects that you must do. You’ll also learn about installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic plumbing and heating systems.
You’ll learn in our workshops and classrooms.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This level 2 plumbing technical certificate qualification enables you to develop practical skills combined with classroom learning. Units included are pipework systems understanding and installation, cold water systems, domestic hot water systems, central heating pipework, sanitation, and building engineering services awareness. You must supply safety footwear and your own protective clothing.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths, both of which should be a minimum of grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which must include a science or technical based subject.

Students previously studying with us will need to have attained a level 1 Diploma in Plumbing, plus English and maths at grade 3 minimum or the equivalent Functional Skills.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold a formal English and maths qualification at level 2 minimum subject to availability.

All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.

How you will be assessed

There will be assessment throughout the programme by your tutors to check learning and underpinning knowledge of the subjects you will be undertaking. Practical assessments will also be tutor designed formative assessments to assess progress throughout the year.

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following City Guilds assessments:
One externally set, externally moderated assignment (practical assessment)
One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions.
There is also an employer involvement element to this qualification that is required in order to achieve the Technical Certificate.

Additional Costs

You will be required to purchase some basic equipment to support your learning and protect you during normal working practice in the workshop. Approximate combined cost for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tool kit of £85. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost. You will be advised what is required during the application process. There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £155.00 if applicable. Re-sits for applicable examinations are chargeable.

Course and Career progression

This course has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress into an Apprenticeship or direct into employment. This vocational route at level 2 is a vital step towards becoming a competent plumber.

After certification, enrolment onto an appropriate level 3 programme (T-Level) may be possible if you meet the entry criteria subject to availability.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
