Course Overview

This one year course is for adults (19+) who are seeking employment in the plumbing industry. The course is a stepping stone to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2 which is the required level to be recognised as a qualified tradesperson. To complete the route to industry certification, you will complete this course and can then top up to an NVQ level 2 diploma through additional training. To do this you need to be able to gain work experience with a qualified professional who can oversee your work.

The course runs in two groups based on numbers. One group attends on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and the other on a Wednesday and Thursday.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

There are ten units: health and safety in building services engineering; electrical principles and processes for building services engineering; scientific principles for domestic industrial and commercial plumbing; common plumbing processes; cold water systems; domestic hot water systems; drainage systems; sanitation; central heating systems; and understanding how to communicate with others within building services engineering.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required. Basic maths will be required in the form of measuring and marking out, plus working with formula in order to perform associated calculations. Candidates will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

You will be assessed throughout each unit. In addition you will have to undertake practical assessments and you will require a week off work to do this.

Course and Career progression

Successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for the level 2 NVQ Diploma or enter employment as an apprentice. Some people progress on to the Plumbing Advanced Technical Diploma level 3 – which is a full-time course so you would study during the day. This course is a more design-orientated and fault finding of more complex cold water, hot water and central heating systems.
