Course Overview

This qualification is for students aged 16-18 wanting to learn the basic skills and knowledge involved in plumbing. The qualification covers a range of basic tasks and underpinning knowledge involved in plumbing.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

THe unites taught on this course include: Structure of the construction industry; fundamental safe working practices; environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings; site preparation for working in the construction industry; above-ground drainage; copper pipework; plastic pressure pipework; low carbon steel pipework; installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems; plumbing science. These components will enable a rounded basic experience in developing your knowledge towards your destination at the end of the one year programme.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance. You should have a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 2 or above (E/F) is required plus two further GCSEs at grade 2 or above including a science or technology-based subject.

All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and the outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.

How you will be assessed

You will be continuously assessed and have assignments. All work will be graded and checked for content as well as grammatical errors. All work produced is designed to help the student grow in confidence during their learning programme.

Additional Costs

The approximate combined cost for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tool kit of £85. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost. There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £110 if applicable. Re-sits for applicable examinations are chargeable.

Course and Career progression

Successful completion of a level 1 study programme enables you to progress to the following qualifications: City Guilds Plumbing Technical Certificate 8202-25 level 2 (with employment as an apprentice plumber); Plumbing and Heating NVQ-Diploma (6189-11) level 2; Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems NVQ Diploma (6189-21) level 2; or an apprenticeship.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a welcome event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
