Course Overview

This course is for you if you are interested in working on a construction site specialising in plastering and drylining. This level 2 qualification offers you the perfect opportunity to develop practical skills needed by employers in the industry, whilst giving you a variety of trades skills to learn.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled in a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience programme and attend a Personal Development session.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This is a level 2 diploma course which covers a range of hands on skills and tasks in the following areas: Plastering and Drylining. You will also study and gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas health safety and welfare, construction methods and techniques aligned to the chosen construction trades.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths, both of which should be a minimum of grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which must include a science or technical based subject.

Students previously studying with us will need to have attained a level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills plus English and maths at grade 3 minimum or the equivalent Functional Skills.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold a formal English and maths qualification at level 2 minimum subject to availability.

All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is by students compiling a portfolio of evidence for each theory unit taken and completing a practical assessment for each trade area.

During the first weeks, you will be assessed to make sure that the programme is the correct for you and that you will be able to succeed. We will talk to you if there are any problems during these first 6 weeks.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a Basic Tool Kit will require purchasing. Approximate combined cost of £90. Basic stationery is required. There is a materials fee applicable to this course. Re-sits for applicable examinations are chargeable.

Course and Career progression

The primary aim of this qualification is to help prepare you to progress into further learning and training to prepare you to work on a construction site. You may take the qualification as part of a pre-apprenticeship programme or a traineeship. Once you have studied the qualification, you should be in a position to decide which construction trade area you would like to specialize in. You could then consider progressing on to study further study programmes or into an apprenticeship.

You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event/Interview at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study, and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
