Pattern Cutting for Industry

Course Overview

The course will introduce you to pattern cutting techniques used within the fashion industry. Using a variety of different technical tools, the learning experience will be hands on giving you a greater opportunity to develop sought-after technical skills. Over the duration of the course, you will become acquainted with drafting blocks and how to convert them into styles of your own.

This is a full cost course. There is no fee remission available and you cannot apply for an advanced learner loan to pay for your fees.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The course works from standard-size 12 blocks and explores techniques for bodices, sleeves, collars, skirts and trousers. The course gives you the opportunity to have weekly verbal feedback on your pattern cutting and provides additional resources for you to explore at your own pace. You will also learn about personal and standard measurements, pattern labelling for industry, the use of darts within fashion and collar and sleeve styles.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements are needed but an understanding of pattern cutting would be desirable.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment is continuous throughout the course and although you don’t earn a recognised qualification, you will receive a College certificate at the end.

Course and Career progression

The course provides a solid grounding in understanding the basics of pattern cutting and garment construction. This course can lead onto further pattern cutting/garment construction part time courses as offered throughout the year by the College. There are a range of other short courses offered at Leicester College such as laser cutting, printmaking, ceramics, jewellery, and photography which may inspire you to continue studying on a part-time basis.
