This is a one-year top-up study programme for students who already hold a 90 credit Diploma that will develop your skills and prepare you for a career in the field of IT, web design, computer networks or associated industries. This course combines academic study and practical work to give you the skills and knowledge required for a career in the computing industry.
What You'll Learn
You will study and use development software to create your very own network. The course will cover the following subjects: computer architecture looking at hardware and how it interacts to form a computer system and platform. You will look at how a computer system is designed and what happens during operation. Website production which looks at servers, scripting and web hosting. You will study maths at level 3 required for the course.
You are required to have 4 GCSEs grade 4 (C) or above to include English and maths.
As part of your study programme, you will be expected to continue studying maths and English through either GCSE re-takes or Functional Skills, dependant on individual needs and qualifications already gained and in addition, you will have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of work or study.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Assessments for this course are completed with informal exercises, practical labs and assignments.

If you are aged 19 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However you may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for the course fee.
Course and Career progression
On successful completion of this course, you have the option to develop a career in the computing industry or further your knowledge and progress to higher education. You may even decide to stay at Leicester College and complete a Higher National Diploma in computing.
There are also many opportunities to apply for an apprenticeship.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
