THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL FOR SEPTEMBER 2020 STARTS.
On this course, you will develop your motor vehicle knowledge across all light-vehicle technologies at an intermediate level, along with all the main systems and skills needed for maintaining them.
You will also develop an understanding of workplace health and safety procedures to ensure that a safe working environment is maintained at all times.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include mandatory retaking GCSEs in English and Maths or undertaking Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
You will also be required to complete a work experience placement of minimum 36 hours in a garage and an employability programme.
What You'll Learn
This course is a vocational subject-based learning programme designed to help you gain apprenticeships or employment by improving your understanding of light vehicle systems.
Most areas are focused on practical skills and involve carrying out tasks on light vehicles within our fully-equipped vehicle workshop.
You will develop your skills and knowledge across the following areas:
1. Engine operating principles
2. Chassis systems
3. Electrical systems
4. Workplace health and safety
5. Industry-specific tools and equipment
6. Job roles in the automotive industry.
Standard entry to this course for 16-18 year olds requires both GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, plus two further GCSEs at grade 4 or above including a science or technical based subject.
Alternatively, we can accept Functional Skills in English and Maths at level 2 for 19+ learners, plus one suitable reference.
It is also desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in education or employment.
A suitable level 1 qualification or suitable industry experience is desirable but not essential.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and Maths qualifications but can demonstrate experience in the industry.
How you will be assessed
The course is mainly assessed practically with some written assessments to ensure systems theory is understood.
Practical assessments are based on engagement with practical tasks, written assessments and completions of worksheets.
Your tutor will provide explanations and demonstrations to guide you through practical activities.

Tuition Fees (19+): £1500.00
You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities in the workshops, which should consist of black steel toe cap safety boots, plain navy all in one overalls.
There should be no deviation from the colour scheme and the kit would be expected to cost between £45 and £50.

Course and Career progression
This course is a great option for students who wish to start a career in the automotive industry.
The qualification offers you a basis for progression into further education on a higher level course, or an opportunity to enter employment either through apprenticeships or an entry-level role as a motor vehicle technician.

You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your
application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
