Do you have a passion for motor vehicles? Are you Interested in working on motor vehicles for a career? If so, this could be the right course for you. Our ABC level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies is designed to introduce you to the basic mechanical skills and theoretical knowledge that you’ll need to work in the automotive repair industry.
If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.
If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.
What You'll Learn
The course is comprised of 10 core units – automotive health safety, petrol diesel engines, engine cooling lubrication, transmission systems, steering suspension, braking systems, vehicle inspection techniques, wheels tyres, and vehicle valeting.
In our modern, well-equipped workshops you will learn how to safely carry out repair and maintenance on a wide range of training vehicles. In classroom/online-based theory sessions you will learn about theoretical principles for each automotive system.
Throughout the course you will also undertake a personal social development (PSD) programme which aims to equip you with range of transferable skills, including how to keep yourself safe, contribute to society and your local community, and communication teamwork skills.
Direct entry to this course requires a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2 (these must include English maths). It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum attendance record of 90% at your previous place of study or work. Progressing learners will be required to have completed an entry level 3 Motor Vehicle study programme, including Functional Skills English at entry level 3 (or above).
How you will be assessed
Throughout the course you will be evaluated by set practical (workshop-based) assessments and online knowledge assessments set by the awarding body.

Tuition Fees (19+): £1500.00
You will be required to purchase your own personal protective equipment (PPE) which should include safety boots and navy-blue overalls. You may obtain these from wherever you wish but further guidance will be given to you during the enrolment process. You will also be required to obtain some basic stationary. Again, further guidance will be given to you during the enrolment process.
If the course is longer than one year the total fees are for the first year only and further fees may apply in future years. All fees are based on a ‘home’ learner status. Please contact us for information on overseas fees.

Course and Career progression
Upon successful completion of the course, your progression options may include any of our level 2 automotive provision (Motor Vehicle Studies Diploma level 2, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Diploma level 2, Bodywork / Paint Refinishing Diploma level 2) or employment in the motor trade as part of a national apprenticeship scheme.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event/Interview online or at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
