This course is for those who are looking for a challenge in a practical working environment, working on all types of cars.
Our one-year course covers all light vehicle technologies at an advanced level, including in-depth practical experience in diagnostic and rectification.
This is a stepping stone into various job roles in the motor vehicle industry.

Year 1

This qualification is a hands-on learning experience. It covers a range of theory and practical skills in these areas.

1. Light vehicle diagnostics and rectification principles of engine
2. Tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, and electrical systems.
3. Personal and social development
4. Employment skills

This course is for improving your understanding of a range of light vehicle systems. It will also develop your skills in advanced diagnostic and repair on all major systems. You will also build a deep understanding of workplace health and safety. You will learn about key tools and equipment. You will also learn about job roles in the automotive industry.

Direct entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work. GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 4 or above are required, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 including a science or technical-based subject and the relevant level 2 diploma in vehicle repair and maintenance.

If you are a current Leicester College student, you must have completed the level 2 Motor Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Course and have GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 including a science or technical-based subject.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold both English and maths Functional Skills qualifications at level 2 and industry experience.

You will be assessed through practical work and written assignments.
Your tutor will provide explanations and demonstrations. They will guide you through activities. Then, we will assess you based on these.
You will also complete a portfolio of evidence during the course. It will cover workshop tasks, online exams, and phase tests for each topic you study.

You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities.
This includes black steel toe cap safety boots and a plain navy overall, which on average cost between £45 and £50.

After completing this qualification, you might choose to progress onto a level 4 Automotive Engineering Diploma or you may decide to start your career journey by applying for a job as a Motor Vehicle Technician.

Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a welcome event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
