This course is for those who are looking for a challenge in a practical working environment, working on all types of cars.

Teaching covers all light vehicle technologies at an advanced level, including in-depth practical experience in diagnostic and rectification.

You will also be expected to complete advanced practical tasks to industry standard and be able to diagnose complex faults across a range of applications.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

Year 1

This qualification is a vocational subject-based learning programme covering a range of theory and practical skills across the following areas:

1. Light vehicle diagnostics and rectification principles of engines
2. Tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission and electrical systems.
3. Personal and social development
4. Employment skills

This course is designed to improve your understanding of a range of light vehicle systems and develop your skills in advanced diagnostic and rectification procedures on all major systems. In addition, you will build a detailed understanding of workplace health and safety, essential tools and equipment and job roles in the automotive industry.

Direct entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work. GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 4 or above are required, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 including a science or technical based subject and the relevant level 2 diploma in vehicle repair and maintenance.

If you are a current Leicester College student, you must have successfully completed the level 2 Motor Vehicle Repair Maintenance Course and have GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 including a science or technical based subject.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold both English and maths Functional Skills qualifications at level 2 and industry experience.

Assessment takes places through a combination of practical and written assignments, alongside online exams.
Your tutor will provide explanations, demonstrations and guide you through practical activities before being assessed based on these observations.

You will also complete a portfolio of evidence throughout the course covering workshop tasks, online exams and phase tests for each topic you study.

You will have practical assessments based on observations of activities in the workshop, written assessments based on completion of theory in the classroom, alongside online exams.

Additional Costs

You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities.
This includes black steel toe cap safety boots and a plain navy overall, average costing between £45 and £50.

This course is designed for students looking for a career in the automotive industry.
After successfully completing this qualification, you might choose to progress onto a level 4 Automotive Engineering Diploma or alternatively you may decide to start your career journey by applying for a job as a Motor Vehicle Technician.
