This level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in make-up artistry aims to provide you with a range of essential technical and practical skills as well as the knowledge that will equip you to seek employment or further training within the make-up industry. You will also be required to complete 37 hours external work experience and an employer involvement programme.
If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.
If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.
What You'll Learn
This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training or to enter the world of work within the make-up industry.
You will study the following:
-Working in film, TV, and theatre industries
-The creation and presentation of a look book and an industry portfolio
-Fashion and photographic make-up
-Media makeup creative hair design
-Creative historical hair and make-up (recreating historical looks such as Egyptian, Renaissance, Elizabethan, Victorian, Edwardian through to 20th Century hair makeup)
-Applying full body art
-Cosmetic camouflage make-up
-Specialist bridal hair and make-up
-Cutting and styling techniques for performers
-Avante-garde hair and make-up
-Media make-up blogging
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required and you must hold a level 2 equivalent qualification in a related subject, such as make-up, beauty/hair.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and Maths qualifications.
If you are aged 16-18, you will need to have already achieved grade 4 or above in English and Maths, also have an equivalent Level 2 Qualification in make-up, Hair/Beauty. You will also be required to complete work experience hours and an employability programme.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed informally during your course leading up to formal assessments. These will be an externally-set and externally-marked written exam and an externally-set, internally-marked and externally-moderated assignment. The synoptic’ assignment is a practical-based assessment which will require you to identify and use a selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories and knowledge you have gained throughout the year.

Course and Career progression
This qualification will allow you to progress onto a higher education qualification in makeup artistry, such as our Level 5 Foundation Degree in Artistic Make-up Special Effects. This qualification could lead to a job as a make-up artist working in one of the following establishments: photographic studios, department stores, make-up stores, salons or you could also work as a freelance make-up artist, photographic make-up artist, editorial make-up artist, T.V make-up artist, video make-up artist, and specialist bridal make-up artist.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
