Course Overview

This is a fast-paced course for adults (19+). This course is offered at various sites either face to face or online via Teams. You need to attend once a week. Your class will be either a morning 9:30am-12:30pm or an evening 5:30pm –8:30pm. 

You will have an additional 3 hours of independent study each week.   

You will learn in an encouraging and supportive environment and gain confidence to progress to your next step in education or employment.  

This course is for people who have not previously achieved a grade 9-4 (or equivalent) in GCSE Mathematics.  

You will need to attend an assessment session prior to enrolling to make sure that this is the right course for you. 

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This GCSE course helps to develop your knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving and mathematical reasoning skills. Through studying this course, you will become more confident in the following topics: number, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics and ratio.

You will develop your mathematical reasoning skills and learn how to apply the skills you have acquired to solve mathematical problems.

Entry Requirements

This is an adult course; you must be 19 years old before the 31st August 2024. You cannot have previously achieved a grade 4 or above (grade C or above) in GCSE mathematics; please check your eligibility before applying.

You do not need to have any previous qualifications. The entry requirement for the course is the successful completion of an assessment (duration 1 hour). This will assess whether you have the necessary maths skills to enrol on the course.

You must be able to attend every session of the course throughout the year, as well as completing at least three hours of independent study every week to give yourself the best chance of success.

How you will be assessed

At the end of the course there are 3 exams covering all of the topics. You are allowed to use a calculator on two out of the three exams.

The exams will be in late May and early June on dates set nationally and will be held at Abbey Park Campus.

Course and Career progression

This qualification could be used to support your progress into further education and/or employment. Many employers require employees to have a grade 4 or above in mathematics. GCSE maths at grade 4 or higher is increasingly becoming a requirement for many higher-level courses, such as teaching, nursing, social work, sciences and engineering.
