Course Overview
We offer a range of maths courses for you to improve your skills and confidence in all areas of maths as well as the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification in functional skills.
You can work at all levels, from beginner to level 2, and our classes are offered across the city as well as at the main campuses, including Layton Road, City Skills Centre and community venues.
Our flexible provision enables you to access classes at different times throughout the academic year. Most of our classes are in the morning, afternoon or evening and meet once a week. We also offer a range of short courses, which include a 10 week course for 1 day a week.
You will learn in a supportive environment, with experienced teachers.
Our maths courses are suitable for people who want to increase their confidence, improve their chances at work or to get a job, and to help their children.
What You'll Learn
Year 1
At Entry Level skills learnt include basic practical maths that you will be able to use in your everyday life. These will cover simple calculations, fractions, measurement and how to use tables and charts.
As you develop these skills, you will become more confident in recognising how maths can be applied to day-to-day situations. You will demonstrate your skills for certification through classroom-based assessment.
At Levels 1 and 2 skills learnt include being able to recognise how everyday situations can be represented using maths. You will learn how to calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages, how to create tables and charts, how to use metric measurements and how to work out averages, amongst other things.
You will develop mathematical tools and operations; be able to apply these procedures appropriately to a situation or problem; be able to interpret results and consider the accuracy and conclusions to be drawn from this information.
Entry Requirements
Our classes are for adults, and you must be 19 or above on 31st August 2023.
There are no formal entry requirements. When you apply, you will be invited to attend an assessment session. One of our tutors will talk to you, and will complete an assessment in order to find out your level and identify the most appropriate class for you.
We do ask that you want to improve your maths skills and have a willingness to attend every session, work independently and achieve the qualification within the agreed timescales.
Our classes are free to most learners who do not already have a maths level 2 functional skills qualification or a maths GCSE A* to C (grade 4). We will confirm this with you before you start.
How you will be assessed
At entry level you will complete a maths assessment within the class, which will be assessed by your tutor. At level 1 and level 2 you will undertake one formal exam. The functional skills maths exam takes 2 hours.
