Mathematics GCSE Adult 19+ – C6996

This course is designed to support students who wish to develop basic understanding of mathematics and gradually move to more complex and problem-solving challenges. Working at your own pace, you will work through the syllabus by studying maths content aimed at grades 1 to 3. You will then move towards stretching your knowledge into problem-solving maths questions aimed at grades 4 to 5 and then choose to progress your studies towards the higher tier material, at grades 6 to 9, in preparation for the higher tier exam.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.

For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

Year 1

Our blended (face to face and online) GCSE mathematics course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of concepts and techniques to provide a foundation of mathematical skills for further study. Through studying this course, you will become more confident in applying maths skills to solve problems and you will develop an understanding of the importance of maths in everyday life.

The subject content for online GCSE mathematics includes numbers, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics as well as ratios.

You don’t need to have any previous qualifications, but you will be at an advantage if you have a grade 3 (D) at GCSE in Maths or level 2 functional skills maths. If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Firstly you will complete an initial assessment will take place in September/October to determine your suitability for the course, following this you will complete on going assessments in class and some of the assessment will be online throughout the course to check your understanding. Your GCSE grade will be based on a final exam taking place in May/June 2023.

This qualification could be used to support your progress into further education and/or employment. Many employers require employees to have a grade 4 or above in mathematics. Achieving a GCSE maths level 4 or higher (grade C or higher) will increase your opportunities to apply for a range of jobs and further courses. GCSE maths level 4 or higher is increasingly becoming a requirement for many higher level courses, such as teaching, nursing, social work, sciences and engineering.

You will be contacted to come into College for an assessment and based on the assessment you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course or you may be directed to do the functional skills maths. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
