Course Overview

This level 2 technical certificate in make-up artistry will provide you with a range of essential technical and practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or further training within the make-up industry. It is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years. You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to start this qualification.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the make-up industry. You will study the following mandatory content: principles of working in the make-up industry, during which you will learn how to comply with relevant legislation and work professionally, following safe working practices.

Within anatomy and physiology for make-up artists, you will learn how face shape is created by the underlying bone and muscle structure creating facial proportions to enable you to enhance a person’s features. You will also study the skin and underlying structures so you are able to choose and use appropriate products.

During the research, develop and showcase unit you will gain a clear understanding of the principles of researching for make-up artistry designs, explore your own creativity and imagination, and learn how to create mood boards and face and hair charts from information gathered.

The art of applying makeup will help you to develop knowledge of skin tones, face shapes and provide you with a wide range of application techniques to create total looks for models and clients.

Hair artistry covers the fundamental skills for creating hairstyles to complement and complete looks and allow you to experiment with different techniques, products, tools, and equipment. Using the skills gained within creative make-up artistry you will be able to design and apply creative make-up including special effects e.g. cuts and bruises, upper body art, and face art.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one good reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE/or equivalent in both English (minimum) at grade 3 and Maths at grade 3 (desirable) or above. Evidence of ‘Creative ability/dexterity’ skills is required.

If you are aged 16-18, a GCSE in both English (minimum) at grade 3 and maths at grade 3 (desirable) or above is required. You may be required to study English and maths alongside your course to achieve grade 4 in order to progress to level 3. You will also be required to complete 36 hours of external work experience and an employer involvement programme.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed informally during your course leading up to formal assessments. These will be an externally set and externally marked written exam and an externally set, internally marked and externally moderated assignment. The ‘synoptic’ assignment is a practical based assessment which will require you to identify and use effectively in an integrated way a selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories and knowledge you have gained throughout the year.

Course and Career progression

This qualification will allow you to progress onto a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Media Make-up Artistry. This qualification could lead to a job as a make-up artist working in one of the following establishments: photographic studios, department stores, make-up stores, salons or you could also work as a freelance make-up artist.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the college for a tour and suitability audition. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
