Course Overview

Looking to support you in a work environment, this course aims to support young people with learning disabilities develop the skills needed to become a valued employee.

You will also work towards further improving your maths, English and ICT skills and complete recognised qualifications in Functional Skills and employability.

We offer supported work placements in a variety of settings, some of our placements are with: Leicester’s University hospitals, city schools, De Montfort University, De Montfort Hall, Morningside Arena and Leicester City Council.

You will be assigned a trainer assessor who will support you on your placement to refine the skills required, problem solve, work as part of a team and communicate effectively.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will spend most of your time within supported work placements outside of the College campus. You will further develop your maths and English at Functional Skills level within our adult learning facility at City Skills Centre.

During your time on the course, you will enhance your CV and explore what it is really like to have a job. You will be assigned a supervisor whilst on placement and be supported by a trainer assessor. You will have regular opportunities to meet with your key worker to discuss additional support and development needs.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but you must show a commitment to work and be prepared to take part in our travel training programme. At your interview, you will need to show that you can achieve 90% attendance.

How you will be assessed

There is no formal assessment criteria, a review of your work placement booklet, a discussion based around your reference and how to use this to support your future career aspirations and careers guidance and sign posting are all incorporated within this final review.

Course and Career progression

We aim to develop and enhance skills required for the working environment; improve your confidence and motivation, improve your communication skills and personal effectiveness. At the end of the course it is expected that you will progress to work or to the work support services offered by agencies such as Job Centre Plus, Connexions and Access to Work.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview , then you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol upon your chosen course of study.You will also be able to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.

For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
