Course Overview

This exciting 7-week course is for adults aged 19+. It will teach and improve skills in making leather crafts. These can be decorative or practical.

You will learn how to create patterns for your item. Then, you will learn to cut, prepare, stitch, finish, and embellish it.

You will also learn to use relevant hand tools, techniques, and products. As you progress, these skills will help you. They will let you produce more advanced and individualised work in the area. The course will teach the craft. It aims to return you to education, prepare you for work, boost your confidence, and improve your health.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

At our St Margarets Campus, in our footwear department, you will learn leathercraft. It is a 7-week program. You will produce various items.

The leather craft course will include learning and practical work on:
Types of leather.
Pattern production.
Cutting.
Skiving.
Adhesives.
Preparations of material.
Saddle stitch.
Basic tools.
Maintenance of tools.
Burnishing leather edges.
Health and Safety in leather crafts.
Health and Safety in the Workshop.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.

How you will be assessed

There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one-to-one feedback.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed to enable a return to education and prepare for further learning or employment, build your confidence, or look after your health and well-being, whilst learning a new craft. You will have opportunities to progress onto further higher-level courses, or you may wish to take your experience forward into designing and producing your own work at home, utilising the skills you have developed.

What Happens Next

You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
