Course Overview

Get crafting with our 7-week course in leathercrafts for adults 19+.

You will first learn to produce a pattern for your item. Then, you will cut, prepare, stitch, finish, and embellish it.

You will also learn how to use relevant hand tools, techniques, and products. These skills will help you create advanced, personal work in the field as you progress. The course will teach the craft. It aims to help you return to education, prepare for work, and build your confidence. It also seeks to improve your health and well-being.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This course takes place at our St Margaret’s Campus. It has all our specialist equipment for the creative courses we offer.

The leathercraft course will include learning about:
Types of leather.
Pattern production.
Cutting.
Skiving.
Adhesives.
Preparations of materials.
Saddle stitch.
Basic tools and maintenance
Burnishing leather edges.
Health and Safety using materials and in the workshop.

All of the above will help you develop the skill set required to work with leather.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.

How you will be assessed

There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one to one feedback.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed to enable a return to education and prepare for further learning or employment, build your confidence, or look after your health and well-being, whilst learning a new craft. You will have opportunities to progress onto further higher-level courses, or you may wish to take your experience forward into designing and producing your own work at home, utilising the skills you have developed.

What Happens Next

Please apply on the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course of study.
