Course Overview

This exciting seven week evening course aims to introduce and advance the skills required in the production of small leather bags that can be made for everyday use. You will be introduced to various patterns, taking you through the processes of cutting, preparation, stitching and finishing. Alongside this, you will be instructed in the use of relevant hand tools, techniques, and products. As you progress, these skills will enable you to produce more advanced work within the area.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

Throughout the 7-week programme, you will be instructed in various aspects of leather craft to produce small bags.

These will include.
Types of Leather and Materials.
Pattern production for small bags.

Cutting techniques and tools
Methods of skiving and tools.

Saddle stitch.
Burnishing leather edges.
Decorative finishing techniques and products.
Health and Safety in leather crafts.
Health and Safety in the Workshop.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.

How you will be assessed

There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one-to-one feedback.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress onto other areas of practical crafts. You will have opportunities to progress onto more advanced courses, or you may wish to take your experience forward into designing and producing your own work at home, utilising the skills you have developed.

What Happens Next

You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
