Course Overview

This is a taster course that will take place on Tuesday 2 July, 10:30 – 12:30 at Highfields Community Centre. This course is for those who would like to feel more confident using their smartphone. During this taster course, the tutor will share information with you about our Introduction to Computing Beginners courses which starts next academic year 2024/25.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During the session, you will learn:

– Tips and tricks for using WhatsApp
– Making the most of your voicemail, contacts, and other phone functions
– Exploring the settings of your phone
– Using your email account on your smartphone (You will need your email address and password if not already downloaded the app)

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19+ and have ESOL/Functional Skills Entry Level 3 minimum
A smartphone
Your email address and password (if not already downloaded the app)

How you will be assessed

There are no formal assessments, exams or coursework.

Your tutor will informally assess your progress..   

You will receive a certificate of course completion.

Course Fees

Tuition fees

Tuition Fees (19+): £10.00

Additional Costs

The cost of the course is £10.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:

– Universal Credit
– JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)

There will be no fees if you earn less than £22,308.


If the course is longer than one year the total fees are for the first year only and further fees may apply in future years. All fees are based on a ‘home’ learner status. Please contact us for information on overseas fees.

Course and Career progression

Once you have completed this course, you may progress onto our Introduction to Computing Beginners course or one of the variety of the other adult education courses.

Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the College’s Careers Team to support your progression.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course’s entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
