Course Overview

Designed to develop your knowledge of team, leadership and management industries from a management perspective, this HTQ course aims to enhance your skills to progress into employment within these industries. Our course aims to give students a wide range of industry experience through guest speakers, trips and live projects with business providers.

The purpose of Pearson BTEC HND-year one is to develop students as independent-thinking professionals who can meet the demands of employers and adapt to a constantly changing world.
The qualification aim is to widen access to higher education and improve the career prospects of those who take them.
Qualification in leadership and management, is suitable for all types of industries. We can offer Internal progression, a familiar working environment, and experienced delivery staff, with providing a blended learning approach to accommodate flexible teaching and learning.

The level 4 units lay the foundations of learning by providing a broad introduction to business and different business functions. This develops and strengthens core skills while preparing the student for study at level 5 or to enter employment with the qualities necessary for job roles that require some personal responsibility.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

In year one, the Level 4 units lay the foundations of learning by providing a broad introduction to business and different business functions. Modules delivered in year one are: The contemporary business environment, Marketing, HR, Leadership and Management, Accounting, Business project, Managing a business project, Planning and management, and Digital business.

These modules develop and strengthens core skills while preparing the student for study at level 4 or to then progress onto level 5 or enter employment with the qualities necessary.

Students will gain a wide range of business knowledge tied to practical skills gained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios. Students are involved in vocational activities that help them to develop vocational behaviours (the attitudes and approaches required for a competence) and transferable skills.

Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and the workplace. By the end of level 4, students will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of leadership and management. They will be competent in a range of subject-specific skills as well as general skills and qualities relevant to key areas of business.

Year 2

Once you have completed year one, you will then be able to re-apply and progress onto the second year to complete the Higher technical qualification in leadership and management.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires references, 95% attendance at your last place of work or study, and four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths (or Functional Skills). A minimum of grade 4/5 for maths would be an advantage due to course content.

Consideration will be given to all applicants for 19 who hold equivalent English and maths qualifications.

Due to the nature of this programme, you may be invited to attend an interview. Where necessary other means of an interview (i.e. telephone, web-based) can be arranged.

How you will be assessed

Formal assessment will be completed through a number of shorter tasks to help build your academic knowledge and practice. There are a variety of graded summative assessment methods at module level utilised in this programme which include report writing, presentations, live projects and case studies. These assessments will count towards your final grade and on average there are one to two assessments for each module, spread throughout the academic year

Course and Career progression

As a successful graduate from this programme, you can progress onto year two, the level 5 higher technical qualification or may go into employment. Many of our students choose to go straight into employment and have successfully gained roles in travel agencies, hotel management airlines and airports, visitor attractions, tourism marketing, and events management.

What Happens Next

Applications to our full-time undergraduate courses must be made through UCAS using the course code C807, institution code L36 and apply for a student loan. 32 UCAS points is required. You can then continue to study with us on a level 5 higher technical qualification, after completing year one. This course will give you further insight and knowledge on business-related topics that can then be further pursued at either university or within the world of work. Alternatively, you may decide to pursue an apprenticeship or employment.

Apply online via the College website. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
