The introductory welding skills qualification (level 1) and the welding skills qualification (level 2) gives you the opportunity to learn the basic skills required to effectively carry out welding operations in a range of joints and positions. The City and Guilds award qualifications in welding skills can either be at level 1 or 2 depending on your experience and will help you to develop the skills required to take on basic welding tasks through to complex welding and quality control. This is a full cost course. There is no fee remission available and you cannot apply for an advanced learner loan to pay for your fees.
The course will start with an induction into our welding workshop which will cover all aspects of health and safety associated with working in a welding environment, safe set up of welding plant and equipment with demonstrations on techniques. Before attending you will need to have an idea on the welding process you want to focus on for the qualification, the welding processes we can accommodate are: • MIG/MAG • TIG • MMA (also known as stick welding) For the duration of the 18 weeks you will then use the time to practice techniques and gain an understanding of the welding parameters through brief group discussions and practical application.
For level 1, you are not required to have any formal entry requirements, but an interest in, or some basic knowledge of the welding industry. For level 2, you should have completed a level 1 welding qualification or you are already working in the welding industry and are looking to develop your skills further in order to increase your responsibilities, skills and knowledge.
Each level of qualification is assessed with five practical assessments which include specific joints in a range of positions. Level 1 test pieces are assessed visually to a set criteria. Level 2 test pieces are visually examined before being destructive testing.
