Introductory Welding Skills City Guilds Award – P00226

This introductory welding skills qualification allows you to learn the basics of effectively carrying out welding operations in a range of joints and positions.

The course can be taken at level 1 or level 2 depending on your experience and will help you to develop the skills required to take on basic welding tasks through to complex welding and quality control.

Year 1

The course will start with an induction into our welding workshop which will cover all aspects of health and safety associated with working in a welding environment, safe set up of a welding plant and equipment, with demonstrations of techniques. Before attending you should have an idea of the welding process you want to focus on for the qualification.

We accommodate for the following on the course:
1. Metal inert gas (MIG)/metal active gas (MAG)
2. Tungsten inert gas (TIG)
3. Manual metal arc (MMA), also known as stick welding.

For the duration of the 18 weeks, you will then use the time to practice techniques and gain an understanding of the welding skills through brief group discussions and practical application.

For level 1, you are not required to have any formal entry requirements, but an interest in, or some basic knowledge of, the welding industry.

For level 2, you should have completed a level 1 welding qualification or be currently working in the welding industry and looking to develop your skills further to increase your responsibilities, skills and knowledge.

Each level of qualification involves five practical assessments which include specific joints in a range of positions. Level 1 test pieces are assessed visually to a set criteria. Level 2 test pieces are visually examined before destructive testing.

As part of this course you may wish to purchase a recommended textbook which is available to purchase online for £30, or alternatively is available in our library.
You will need fire retardant overalls and work boots (from work or we can advise on details and suppliers at enrolment).

Upon completing this course, you can move through levels 1 to 3 of the City Guilds award for your chosen welding specialism. You may also want to expand your welding ability by completing a similar level in another area of welding.

We have independent career advisors available to speak with at the college to help you with your next steps.

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
