Course Overview

The course takes place at our St Margaret’s Campus and starts on Tuesday 30 April for 9 sessions ending on Tuesday 2 July, 1pm – 3:30pm 

This course is for beginners and those that want to learn the basics. Each week you will be guided through a small sewing project for example, creating your own needle case, piped pin cushion and making a zipper purse.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This course is designed to develop the use of the sewing machine and to use the various feet and attachments that comes with it. 

You will learn how to apply buttonholes, different types of zip application, explore different types of seams and hems. Learn to use different types of fabrics and interfacings.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.  

How you will be assessed

There are no formal assessments, exams or coursework. Your tutor will informally assess your progress each week.

Tuition Fees (16-18): £0.00

Tuition Fees (19+): £90.00

Additional Costs

The cost of the course is £90.00. However you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits: 

– Universal Credit 
– JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group) 

Evidence of benefits will be required on the application. 

There will be no fees if you earn less than £20,319.

Course and Career progression

This course is designed as an introduction to the skills required to undertake small and simple sewing projects to build your confidence and knowledge. You can only complete this course once.

On completion of this course you may you can progress onto our Introduction to Garment Making Course or a Soft Furnishings Course.

Your tutor will be able to advise you on progression routes available to you.
