Course Overview

This course is designed for students wishing to gain an introduction to the basic skills and principles of machine turning of metals using lathes. The course will introduce students to the practical skills of turning and will appeal to a range of people including hobbyists to those wishing to move into a new career pathway.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During the six week evening programme learners will be introduced to the basic functions and operation skills for turning metal using lathes, this will include:
Workshop health and safety (a requirement for the safe use of machine tools in a workshop environment)
Facing techniques
Turning Diameters
Production Tapers
Drilling and Boring
Producing internal and external threads

Entry Requirements

The course is open to all students over the age of 19 who can demonstrate the ability to complete the course.

Additional Costs

You will need to provide your own safety boots and overalls as a requirement of working in a machine workshop environment

Course and Career progression

This course is primarily an interest based programme but could help with career progression for those requiring basic machining skills for careers within the engineering industry. Having gained basic skills in machining using lathes, students may wish to also study the evening course -Introduction to Machine Tool Operation (Milling), to gain skills in using milling machines.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to come into College if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
