Course Overview

This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret’s Campus every Tuesday, 13:00 – 15:30 for 9 weeks starting on 10 September and finishing on 12 November 2024.

This is a course and is designed as an introduction to the skills required to make new garments or alterations to garments.

It is a short course, and you work specifically on one project using a simple pattern decided by the tutor.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this course, you will learn:

– Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
– You will work on a project using a pattern to make a pair of pyjama or casual trousers
– Understanding patterns and pattern markings
– Learning to adjust patterns for a better fit
– Learn to sew pockets , elastic casings. Sew using the appropriate seams and hems.

This course is designed as an introduction to the skills required to undertake small and simple garment making projects. Each week you will develop your confidence and knowledge.

Entry Requirements

This course is designed as an introduction to garment making skills and is suitable for students who have not yet completed a garment making course. You need to have completed the Introduction to Sewing Skills course or have some existing experience in using a sewing machine.

You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.

How you will be assessed

There are no formal assessments, exams or coursework. Your tutor will informally assess your progress each week.    

You will receive a certificate of course completion based on your progress in class and attendance.

Tuition fees

Tuition Fees (19+): £90.00

Additional Costs

The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:

– Universal Credit
– JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)

There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,000.


If the course is longer than one year the total fees are for the first year only and further fees may apply in future years. All fees are based on a ‘home’ learner status. Please contact us for information on overseas fees.

Course and Career progression

You can only complete this course once.

On completion of this course, you may progress on Garment Making Improvers 1 or 2 or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses such as Soft Furnishings or Upholstery. Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the college careers team to support your progression.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the college website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course’s entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course
