Our BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Introductory Award in Engineering is split into three key areas, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop a range of skills in the engineering sector and support progression to further course of study. Candidates aged 16-18 will be enrolled on a Vocational Study Programme which will include work experience, an employability programme, and either Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English (depending on entry qualifications). Starting with the basics of electronics, mechanical and manufacturing engineering you will learn about all the theory and practical aspects of this exciting industry. All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.
The course is comprised of 4 core units, and 6 sector specialist units. The core units are based around organisation, teamwork, and development skills. The sector specialist units include Service Maintenance of Motor Vehicles, Electrical Installation, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Engineering a Product, Welding Processes and assembling Electrical Circuits. Throughout the course you will also undertake a Personal Social Development (PSD) programme which aims to equip you with range of transferable skills, including how to keep yourself safe, contribute to society and your local community, and communication teamwork skills.
Entry to this course requires GCSEs in both English and Maths at grade 2 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, one of which would ideally include a science or technical-based subject. You will also need to provide one reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. Consideration will be given to all internal applicants who are progressing from courses such as Launchpad or ESOL.
You will be assessed through your practical ability in mechanical and electronics workshops, written tests, assignments, and examinations for Functional Skills/ GCSE's. For each unit, you will develop essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Every 8 weeks you will undertake a series of practical (workshop based) and knowledge assessments.

You are expected to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn during all practical sessions. During the Induction period, you will be allocated a locker to store your PPE. Basic requirements are steel toe cap safety boots, and plain navy or black overalls (boiler suit style only). You can purchase your PPE from wherever you wish, however during enrolment you will be given details of some local companies who supply many of our students. The cost of the required PPE would be expected to cost between £30 and £45. You will require some basic stationary (pens, pencils, ruler, ring binder, page dividers). You will be given a course Equipment List during enrolment, detailing specifics.
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event/Interview at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
