As an electrician, you are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. You could be working with indoor and outdoor electrical systems including switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, and metering equipment - also crime and fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies. You should be capable of working alone in an efficient and economical manner and will be expected to set out jobs from drawings and specifications and requisition necessary installation materials and contribute to the design of electrical systems. During this apprenticeship, you will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study. On-programme is the learning phase where apprentices gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours set in the standard. Apprentices must complete 20% off-the-job training during on-programme, which must take place during the apprentice’s contracted hours. Within your first year, you will learn the key principles of electrical installation including: 1. How to install cables and equipment including sockets and switches for electrical installations. 2. How to design electrical installations selecting the correct size and type of cable and equipment. 3. How to test and commission electrical installations to ensure they work and meet the health and safety requirements. 4. The health and safety legislation relating to the installation and maintenance of electrical systems.
After year one, you will develop your knowledge into more specific applications and theory, such as: 1. The science behind electricity e.g. volts, current and resistance. 2. The environmental impact of electrical installations. 3. Building Regulations.
Must have an employer, and have attained Grade A-C in maths and English GCSE.
EPA is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship, where you are expected to demonstrate your learning to an independent end-point assessor. You will also complete the AM2S (Electrotechnical Assessment of Occupational Competence); a single common assessment, externally set and marked by an independent body within an independent assessment structure. It must be taken at an approved AM2 test centre with specific test booths and /or test rigs used only for AM2 assessment.
You must wear PPE at all times at college and in the workshops.
Upon completion of your level 3 qualification in Electrotechnical (Installation/Maintenance), you can progress onto a range of more specialist courses including: Initial and periodic inspection testing and certification Design, erection and verification Electrical equipment maintenance and testing ILM management apprenticeships including Team Leader/Supervisor level 3, Operations/Departmental Manager level 5, Chartered Manager Degree level 6 and the Senior Leader Masters Degree level 7. Alternatively, you may wish to use this qualification to help you progress onto higher level jobs and further your employment opportunities.
