Course Overview
This an 11 week online intensive course, which will run on Fridays three times throughout the year. These courses are planned to start in September, January and April. The course will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Whilst the majority of this course will be taught online, you will be required to come into college for all assessments.
Functional mathematics ensures that individuals can use number, measure shape and space and data handling problem solving skills competently and apply them to challenges within everyday life. The learning is delivered intensively over 10 weeks, every morning for 3 hours, plus 2 hours of self-directed study.
This course is designed for individuals who are already have very strong underpinning mathematics skills very close to either level 1 or level 2 but may require development of their ability to apply those skills and techniques effectively to secure an accredited qualification.
What You'll Learn
Year 1
Functional maths at level 1 and level 2, are designed to develop the learner’s ability to represent situations using mathematics, analyse calculations, solve problems, and interpret mathematics to explain situations. These qualifications give learners the opportunity to demonstrate a sound grasp of the underpinning skills and basics of mathematical skills appropriate to the level of study, and apply mathematical thinking to solve simple problems in familiar situations.
Entry Requirements
Individuals who already have strong underpinning skills at either level 1 or level 2 but require development of their functional skills. You must be able to attend every session and be available for the exam date. You must also be able to work independently for a minimum of 2 hours per week during the course if you are to achieve this qualification within the agreed timescales.
Students must be 19 or over and not already hold an equivalent qualification.
Course placement will be dependent on an informal interview and initial assessment results.
This course requires full attendance.
How you will be assessed
Final assessment is an exam at the end of the course. You be assessed on calculator and non-calculator skills. These are externally assessed exams and you would normally receive your result within 4 weeks.

This course could lead straight onto the GCSE Mathematics or a level 2 Functional Skills Course.
Progressing to a GCSE or level 2 Functional Skills could support your progress into further education and/or employment.
Achieving a Functional Skills Mathematics level 2 qualification will increase your opportunities to apply for a range of jobs and further courses. GCSE Mathematics level 4 is increasingly becoming a requirement for many higher-level courses, such as teaching, social work and nursing. Developing your higher-level skills will also benefit you in any further study as well as at work and in your everyday life.

You need to apply online using the course code C6898. You will then be sent a link to book on for an initial assessment. Once you have taken this you will either be offered a place on this course or signposted to a course which is more suitable to your level.
