Course Overview

As an employee of UHL or LPT undertaking an apprenticeship/professional development programme, there is a requirement to have achieved a Functional Skills English qualification at both Level 1 and level 2 (if you have not already achieved this equivalent level qualification and have a certificate as evidence).
Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2 courses are delivered over 5 weeks. These courses are intensive and you will be required to attend all delivered all sessions, one day per week. This can be through classroom, face to face delivery or alternatively online Microsoft TEAMS delivery. Guided independent learning will be a feature of this course.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

Functional Skills English is made up of 3 units:
Speaking and Listening
Reading
Writing

At Levels 1 and 2 you will develop and become confident in discussion and presentation skills; reading and writing a wide variety of texts; and using accurate punctuation, grammar and spelling.

Development of these skills through independent learning will be a feature of the course.

Entry Requirements

No prior qualifications required.
Completion of a skills check to demonstrate a minimum current skills level at Entry Level 3 and above or alternatively evidence of prior achievement of a Level 1 English qualification (certificate)

How you will be assessed

At level 1 you will do one exam for reading and one exam for writing. The speaking and listening unit will be assessed through an exchange with one other person and you will be observed having a discussion.

At level 2 you will do one exam for reading and one exam for writing. For the speaking and listening unit, you will be observed having a discussion and you will complete a presentation.

Course and Career progression

Achievement of Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills English qualifications as part of your apprenticeship/professional development programme may enable progression on to further apprenticeship training within UHL/LPT.

In addition, the achievement of this qualification may provide the opportunity for further you to progress within the workplace allowing upward movement within the job bandings.

What Happens Next

After applying for this course you will be invited to complete a skills check to establish your current skills, identify areas of maths requiring further development pending allocation of an appropriate course.
