Course Overview

This qualification is designed to introduce you to the exciting opportunities available as part of the front of house team in the Hospitality and Catering Industry.

The course will allow for the development of basic skills and knowledge and core employability skills that you will need to have to work within an environment such as restaurants, reception areas, hotels and customer service. You will learn in a group environment within our award-winning Taste Restaurant which allows you to develop your team building and communication skills.

There will be a focus placed on developing an understanding of professional techniques to support progression onto a higher-level course in college or into a professional establishment at a junior level.

If you are aged 16-18 you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths, if you haven’t already achieved a grade 3 or above at GCSE. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will be working as part of a team starting with developing your customer service skills by serving the general public, time management, building your confidence and learning how to prepare for restaurant service. Throughout the year you will gain a sound knowledge of health and food safety as well as an awareness of allergens.

There will be enrichment opportunities, including mini master class sessions where you will be able to work alongside local chefs and restaurateurs. You could also have the opportunity to work on outside events. We have had the pleasure of serving the Queen twice and we have hosted some high-profile dinners.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a 90% attendance. Applicants with GCSE grades of 1/2 (E/F/G) in English and maths will be considered. We welcome applicants who do not match the standard entry requirements but can demonstrate relevant work experience.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

How you will be assessed

This course is very much focused on developing your practical skills within the Taste restaurant with an added emphasis on gaining knowledge relating to the catering industry. There are nine units to complete, and these are made up of practical assessments via observations within the restaurant environment and theory units which are short answer questions and assignment based. The qualification is gained through the completion of all units.
