This ESOL course is for those aged 16-18 who do not have English as a first language and who wish to improve their English language skills in order to progress to other courses, training or employment. This study programme is offered at five different levels, from entry-level 1 to level 2 and after an initial assessment in English and maths, students are allocated a course at the appropriate level.
You will attend a modular programme consisting of English, maths, ICT, and citizenship, all of which will prepare you to access further education and employment opportunities. You will be improving your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills along with many vocational skills. The course also includes general studies, course taster sessions, projects, work experience and a programme of enrichment including sports and educational visits. You will be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme as part of this course.
There are no formal entry requirements. Your level of English will be assessed through a variety of reading, writing, speaking and ability tasks and your maths level will be assessed by completing an online maths initial assessment programme. Based on the results of these assessment tasks, you will be enrolled onto an entry 1, entry 2, entry 3, level 1 or a level 2 course. It is possible for you to move to the next level during the academic year.
You will complete weekly assessments in English, maths and ICT, built around the topics covered each week. You may also take Functional Skills exams in English and maths.
Leicester College offers free tuition and exam fees for full-time courses if you are a home student aged between 16 and 18 on 31 August 2024, and meet the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and Education Funding Agency (EFA) eligibility rules.
