English Language GCSE Intensive – C7337

This is an intensive, fast paced course for adults (19+) and requires a high level of commitment and enthusiasm given its short duration. This class is based at Freemen’s Park Campus on a Tuesday from 9.30am to 12.30pm each week and is online on a Thursday evening from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. You will have an additional 3 hours of independent study each week too.

You will learn in an encouraging and supportive environment and gain confidence to progress to your next step in education or employment. A well-developed Teams Channel packed with interesting and engaging resources and a detailed course handbook will support you during your studies.

This course is for people who have not previously achieved a level 9-4 or A* – C in GCSE English Language.

You will need to attend an assessment session prior to enrolling to make sure that this is the right course for you.

Year 1

You will develop your reading, writing and communication skills. You will read a wide range of extracts from 19th century non-fiction and 20th and 21st century texts, and develop the skills to critically analyse, evaluate and make comparisons between texts. For writing, you will explore the language and style of a variety of text types, including imaginative writing, letters, articles, reports and travel writing. When you enrol, we will provide you with details of the books you may want to buy, download or loan from the library to help support your studies. Many of these are also available as E-Books which you can download for free.

This is an adult course; you must be 19 before the 31st August 2024. You cannot have previously achieved a grade 4 or above (grade C or above) in GCSE English Language; please check your eligibility before applying.

You do not need to have any previous qualifications. The entry requirement for the course is the successful completion of an assessment (duration 1 hour). This will assess whether you have the necessary English skills to enrol on the course.

You must be able to attend every session of the course, be able to commit to doing at least three hours of independent study every week and be available to take the exams on May 23rd June 6th 2024.

At the end of the course, there are two exams, with a reading and a writing section in each. Paper 1: 19th Century non-fiction and transactional writing. (non-fiction) Paper 2: 20th and 21st Century texts and imaginative writing. The reading sections of the papers will contain extracts of texts that you will not have seen before. You will also need to complete an assessment for speaking and listening skills, through a 10 minute presentation.

The exams will be on May 23 (Paper 1) and June 6 (Paper 2) on dates set nationally and will be held at Abbey Park Campus.

Achieving a GCSE English grade 4 or higher (C grade or higher) will increase the opportunities you have to apply for a wider range of jobs and further courses. GCSE English grade 4 is increasingly becoming a requirement for many higher-level courses, such as teaching, social work and nursing. Developing your higher-level reading and writing skills will also benefit you in any further study as well as at work and in your everyday life.

Apply online via the College website. You will then be contacted to attend an initial assessment. Once this has been marked you will be contacted with some feedback and either offered a place on the course or directed to a course that better matches your current skills.

You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course of study which will start in January 2024.
