English GCSE Adult Evening – C6525

This is a fast-paced, intensive evening course for adults (19+) who have not previously achieved an A* – C grade (or grade 9-4) in GCSE English.

You will need to be motivated and willing to conduct independent study to give yourself the best chance of success. You will have access to our virtual learning environment (Moodle) for resources and learning materials to support your studies, and your tutor will provide you with a detailed course handbook at the start of the course.

This course is not intended to achieve a duplicate GCSE at a grade higher if you already have achieved a grade A* – C (or level 4+).

This is an evening class on Monday evenings (5.45pm to 8.45pm) from September to June at our Abbey Park campus.

Year 1

You will learn to develop your reading, writing and communication skills. You will read a wide range of extracts from 19th century fiction and 20th and 21st century non-fiction texts, and develop the skills to critically analyse, evaluate and make comparisons between texts. For writing, you will explore the language and style of a variety of text types, including imaginative writing, letters, articles, reports and travel writing. When you enrol, we will provide you with details of the textbooks you will need to buy to support your studies.

This is an adult evening course; you must be 19 before the 31st August in the year you apply. You cannot have previously achieved an A* – C grade (or grade 4 or above) in GCSE English Language; please check your eligibility before applying.

You should be confident with your reading and writing skills and ideally have achieved a Grade D (3) or Functional Skills English qualification at Level 2. The main entry requirement for the course is the successful completion of a pre-entry assessment (duration 1 hour) which will test whether you have the appropriate English skills and potential to be successful on the course. The pre-entry assessments will begin during the summer term and continue during part-time enrolment in August (dates to be confirmed). You will need to book an assessment during the part-time enrolment period (20th August to the 29th September) by calling the customer services team at Leicester College.

You must be able to attend every session of the course throughout the year, as well as completing at least three hours of independent study every week to give yourself the best chance of success.

There are two exams, with a reading and a writing section in each. Paper 1: 19th Century Fiction and imaginative writing. Paper 2: 20th and 21st Century Non-Fiction and transactional (non-fiction) writing.

The reading sections of the papers will contain extracts of texts that you will not have seen before. You will also need to complete an assessment of speaking and listening skills, usually through a 10 minute presentation.

In addition, there will be regular homework tasks and four internal assessment points (mock exams) during the year.

The exams will be in early June on dates set nationally and will be held at one of the main college campuses. These are always during the day so make sure you can attend them both, as missing an exam will result in failure of the course and a £50 (per exam) fee.

Achieving a GCSE English Language level 4/5 or higher (C grade or higher) will increase your opportunities to apply for a range of jobs and further courses. GCSE English level 4/5 is a requirement for most higher education (University) courses, as well as our level 3 Access to Higher Education Diplomas.

Developing your reading and writing skills will also benefit you in any further study as well as at work and in your everyday life.

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to come into college if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to have an assessment and enrol for your chosen course of study.
