This is a part-time course for adults (19+) whose first language is not English. This course is offered at St Margaret's Campus on Mondays with a choice of morning (9.30am-12.15pm) or afternoon (1.00pm-3.45pm) sessions. You will have an additional 3 hours of independent study each week. You will learn in an encouraging and supportive environment and gain confidence to progress to your next step in education or employment. This course is for people who have not previously achieved a level 9-4 (or A* – C) in GCSE English in the UK. You will need to attend an assessment session prior to enrolling to make sure that this is the right course for you.
You will improve and develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills with an emphasis on understanding 19th-century fiction, 20th and 21st century non-fiction texts and greater understanding of producing creative and transactional texts. You will also develop the skills to present a short topic to the class. The course will help speakers to improve their extensive reading, comprehension and grammar skills.
This is an adult course; you must be 19 before the 31st of August 2023. You cannot have previously achieved a UK grade 4 or above (grade C or above) in GCSE English Language; please check your eligibility before applying. Potential students will be assessed and need to have achieved a Skills for Life ESOL or Functional Skills Level 1 or Level 2 qualification or be working towards level 1 or level 2 qualifications. Students must demonstrate extensive reading skills. You must be able to attend every session of the course throughout the year, as well as complete at least three hours of independent study every week to give yourself the best chance of success.
At the end of the course, there are two exams, with a reading and a writing section in each. Paper 1: 19th Century non-fiction and imaginative writing. Paper 2: 20th and 21st Century texts and transactional (non-fiction) writing. The reading sections of the papers will contain extracts of texts that you will not have seen before. You will also need to complete an assessment of speaking and listening skills, usually through a 10-minute presentation. The exams will be in early June on dates set nationally and will be held at Abbey Park campus.
Apply online via the College website. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study. You will be contacted to take an initial assessment and then be invited to enrol, or we will discuss alternative options for you.
