Course Overview

To become a counsellor you will need to complete several years of study. Consider this online course as your first step on that ladder. A look into what it takes so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it is the career for you.

This online qualification focuses on key counselling skills and will give you an understanding of the knowledge and skills required in a counsellor. It could be the first step towards a new career or be used to enhance supervision and support skills.

Completion of this qualification does not mean you are a registered counsellor, further training would be required if this is your aim.

On average the course takes 15 weeks to complete. The time frame depends on the time you have available and your prior knowledge.
To complete this qualification you must be able to upload a 5 minute video of yourself demonstrating the skills you have learnt in units 1,2 and 3. This can be role play with a volunteer, it does not have to be a real life counselling session. If you cannot find someone to do the short video with you can ask a qualified person to do a witness testimony for you.

They must hold, as a minimum, a Level 2 Counselling qualification and they must witness you giving a short counselling session. You cannot complete the course without including one of those options within Unit 4.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The qualification consists of the following 4 units:

– Using Counselling skills
– Introduction to counselling skills theories
– Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
– Counselling skills and personal development

Working online, you are supplied with all the information required to complete the course. The assessments are made up of questions asking you to describe, explain, identify or list information. To be able to pass this qualification answers must be in your own words, using sentences and paragraphs.

Entry Requirements

You must be over 19. You are asked to describe what you hope to achieve from the course during enrolment. This helps us to provide you with the right advice and ensure you are on the right course and at the right level.

If you are not a British Citizen you may have to complete a fee assessment to ensure you qualify for government funding.

How you will be assessed

As mentioned in the course overview you will need to upload a 5 minute video to evidence your counselling skills, or provide a witness testimony from a qualified person.

The assessment method is question and answer. It is NOT multiple choice, and all answers must be in your own words to demonstrate your understanding of the topic. The learning materials are there to guide your learning, they are not to be copied from.

The best answers include the theory you have learnt, and how you have used the theory in your job role or in a real-life scenario. This is a level 2 qualification. To be working at level 2 you need to be able to write descriptions and explanations, using full sentences and paragraphs.

After enrolment, you are given 3 weeks for each submission, but if you require longer please contact the Distance Learning team and they will happily agree on an extension with you. Once you have signed up to the course you will receive a welcome email from Equal, our online learning platform. On there you will see a guidance video explaining how the platform works and you will find your initial submission dates there too.

This is a distance learning course, meaning all work is completed from home. You do not attend any classes. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t access support. We have a team of dedicated tutors available to provide any support you might need along the way.
