Course Overview

The Higher National qualifications in Construction and The Built Environment are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning.

Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the industry and are designed to support you to pursue or advance a career in construction and the built environment. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of construction, the Higher Nationals in Construction and the Built Environment give you experience in the sector and prepare you for further study or training.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this course, you will need to complete four mandatory units for the first academic year in the following:

– Legal and Statutory Requirements for Construction
– Construction technology
– Digital Applications for Construction Information
– Construction Environment

Once achieved progress is possible into the second academic year with additional modules to support your studies.

Year 2

The second year will comprise of two mandatory units with the option of two optional units, these will vary due to demand, available tutors and student numbers:

Mandatory
– Construction Design Project
– Tender and Procurement

Optional
– To be decided by Programme Lead depending on student demand and expertise to deliver modules.

Entry Requirements

Candidates will need to be aged 18 years or over on or before 31 August of the academic year the course commences. You will need a minimum of 120 UCAS points. Candidates should have a National Certificate in Building Studies or equivalent, or have relevant industrial experience, and be practising in this discipline at an equivalent level.

This course is aimed at students who already have a level 3 qualification (i.e. A2s, extended/subsidiary diploma, Access to HE) or a strong portfolio of work. You are expected to hold GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or equivalent. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate the ability to study this subject at university level, and who can evidence relevant experience. Due to the nature of this programme, you may be invited to attend an interview or audition. Where necessary other means of interview/audition (i.e. telephone, web-based, CD/DVD) can be arranged.

How you will be assessed

Each year of the programme will include an externally set piece of work, the internally set units at mandatory, specialist and optional will be set and assessed internally through a range of mediums There is a range of assessment methods that can be utilised, such as:
– presentations, written reports, accounts, surveys
– log books, production diaries
– role play
– observations and reflections on practical tasks or performance
– production of visual or audio materials, artefacts, products and specimens
– peer and self-assessment
– time-constrained assessments

Course and Career progression

On completion of this course, you can apply to progress onto our level 5 Higher National Diploma in Construction Management or a related degree programme where you may receive an exemption for the HNC programme. Students can often progress into more senior positions related to construction management, site engineering, building control and quantity surveying.
